If you are thinking about getting any kind of nail enhancement, here are some things for you to think about, as well as some ideas for you on how to maintain them.

Choosing a Nail Shape

One of the things to consider is the shape of the free edge. When choosing a nail shape, you should pick one that enhances the shape of your finger. Take a moment to study your hand, analyzing the finger length and thickness, hand size, and cuticle shape. Keep in mind these suggestions:

  • Petite hands and fingers look best with almond-shaped nails.

  • Short and stocky fingers look best with squoval-shaped nails.

  • Heavyset hands look best with squared-off ends. This is also true for fingers with wide nail beds (the main body of the nail that defines its shape).

  • A rule of thumb is to match the shape of the free edge to that of the cuticle (the protective layer of skin at the bottom of the nail). If the cuticle is oval, go with that shape; if square, make the nail more squoval.

**Ultimately, the nail shape is your choice.

    Maintenance of Enhancements

  • Keep solar oil on your nails daily, as this will keep them from drying out and separating from the enhancement.

  • Treat your nails as jewels, not tools!

  • Nails that are too long for your lifestyle and activity level result in service breakdown. If your nails become too long between appointments, shorten the length with a 240-grit file like the Kanga or Koala.

  • To prevent the spread of communicable or infectious disease, never share your files or implements with others, whether at home or in the salon.

  • Wear gloves when performing household chores, working in the garden, or whenever you use cleaning solutions of any kind.

  • Make and keep biweekly rebalance appointments. Most enhancements will need to be rebalanced every two weeks. This appointment is where the free edge length can be taken down and the area at the back of the nail where the enhancement that has grown out is “filled” in with product.

  • Enhancement Removal

Should you decide to remove your enhancements, please refrain from picking or tearing them off, as this can damage your natural nail plate. Professional removal is strongly recommended. If you would like to remove your nail enhancements on your own, please ask for suggestions on the procedure that would be the least damaging to your natural nail.
